Tonight I was talking with a friend who lost her baby a month ago today. We were exchanging experiences and feelings with the struggles we have as an unseen mother and a poem began to form. As I was putting on the finishing touches, I realized that this is a message from our angel children. With that realization, I adjusted the wording to sound like a child talking about his/her mother.
“MOM IS”
Mom is a title she quietly holds,
A way that many don’t know.
For she has a little one,
But not to love, teach, or grow.
Mom is a name she doesn’t hear,
A situation uncommon for most.
For I live in heaven,
And can’t always be close.
Mom is a badge of honor she wears,
And was gained with much strife.
It was earned through the greatest sorrow –
Gifting heaven with my life.
Mom is a way she lives her life
For inside of her it’s bred.
It’s a mother’s undying love and compassion,
She will plant on any child’s head.
Mom is a trait that lives inside her,
Something no one could deny.
With a nurturing nature and love for kids,
That is found deep inside.
Mom is a love I can feel,
She wears it on her sleeves.
With baby hunger growing,
Daddy can be quite the tease.
Mom is a person she already is,
And she’s the greatest one.
Selfless, kind, and comforting,
She is my one and only.
Mom is a hero I love,
Weary yet strong forever.
The one who wipes away tears,
And makes it all better.
Mom is a sacrifice,
To have many others.
She works and plays for a beautiful life,
For me, there can be no other.
Mom is an angel who never forgets,
The love she has for me, her child.
As I run free in heaven,
It’s on mother I smile.

I dedicate this poem to my friend, Tavia, who lost her son less than two weeks after delivering him.
